It's summer here.
Blue sky, global warming temperatures, school holidays, t-shirt dress code, and mental laziness.
The heat is so intense that in my case, it feels like a mental shutdown.
Due to all this, I wanted to start the summer season with some lighter topics.
But then I realised that we should be more serious.
Because there's always danger on the hot streets!
And in the public transport, bars, and artificially lit parks.
So here comes
our first article

THE SELF-DEFENCE!

I prepared for you three educational videos (plus one case study of real-life application) from well-known experts.
This careful selection covers the basic points of how to practice and teach self-defence in order to:
Never Be Afraid of Violence Again!
The following recording is from the first meeting of "Complete Self-Defence for Women".
The main point you can observe is the proper advertising of teachers' skills and a clear mission statement:
“This course may cost more than the others, but I guarantee you'll never be afraid of violence again.”
Yes, addressing the fear of violence is the best enrollment method.
Let this be a lesson for you, grasshopper. Number one rule for self-defence: fear sells!
Notice also the perfect pedagogy - we must always teach beginners how to attack in order to do a proper technique on them. The sentence
“Like many beginning students, you attacked me wrong!”
should indeed become a part of every teacher's repertoire.
Yes, it might seem that a group of young ladies beat the master.
But it was just his exceptional educational approach. At the end of the class, all girls actively expressed violence against him, and that without fear! That was what he promised at the very beginning.
A true teacher always wants his/her students to surpass him/her.
Well done, Bob!
Teacher Should Reveal All Tricks!
Here is another great sample of martial and teaching skills. It comes from the British army (remember Commandos and Defendu tradition!) and you must love its
clear,
simple,
lethal,
and - I dare to say - unconventional style.
I've chosen this video because it's a direct progression of the previous one. Once students know how to attack properly, they can be shown how to defend themselves. At that point, the range of techniques and principles must widen.
The point is: in a real fight out there, anything can happen, there are no rules whatsoever, and everything can be used as a deadly weapon.
You’re impressed, right?
If you watched carefully, you may have noticed that the first attack is the same as in the previous video. To us, it's no surprise that it's the very shomen uchi that we use in Aikido.
Every true warrior knows: basics are basics, no matter the style!
Moreover, as the following case study shows, the first technique can also be used in defence against a sharp sword.
That's because a banana and a sabre have very similar shapes:
Of course, it's all in the legal framework of self-defence, as the sergeant suggested earlier:
Jones: "You shot Mr. Harrison!"
Sgt.: "That was self-defence."
Street is a Street is a Street
If you’ve incorporated the previous lessons into the teaching in your dojo, you're ready for the street fighting wisdom of Master Ken.
Because we should teach not only techniques.
Logical and consistent theory matters, too:
Have you noticed that Master Ken has the same moustache as Master Bob from the first video? Trust me, it’s not a coincidence.
The best Masters are learning from the best Masters.
And we all stand on the shoulders of these giants.
By the way, do you have any favourite martial arts or self-defence videos like these?
